PLAYING IT FORWARD JESSI NORVELL OF MEGAN DIPIERO PHOTOGRAPHY

In some way, shape, or form, my life has always involved athletics. I grew up golfing and played at the collegiate level. No puffery here; I was a below-average college golfer who was blessed with a wonderful, big-hearted coach, Diane Daugherty. She graciously let me stick around until I earned my degree. That was important to her. Besides great golf mechanics, I learned from her the value of being kind, the importance of accountability, and the impact of giving back to one’s community. Her influence on me, especially in my quirky college years, was immense. In this issue, we’re delighted to highlight several persons very much like my coach—individuals in competitive athletics who found remarkable success in their respective arenas while inspiring and shaping others to be both exceptional gamers and responsible, principled people. It was truly my honor to interview the two men who appear on this issue’s cover: Mark Dantonio and Gary Pinkel. Both are legendary college football coaches, now retired, who winter in Southwest Florida. Bonita Springs resident Dantonio is the winningest coach in Michigan State University history and a two-time Big Ten Coach of the Year. However, one would never know this in quick conversation with him (unless maybe if you’re from Michigan, of course). He epitomizes humility, and his unpretentious demeanor immediately sets folks at ease. Pinkel, another football coaching phenom, is just as unassuming, approachable, and witty as Dantonio. Extremely personable, this Neapolitan achieved the most wins by any coach ever at both the University of Toledo and the University of Missouri; Pinkel will be inducted later this year into the extremely selective College Football Hall of Fame. Learn more about these two coaching superstars and part-time Southwest Floridians starting on page 72. For Enoch Showunmi, former professional soccer player and current club director of Naples United Football Club, meeting goals is just as important as making them. He and his colleagues are dedicated to using soccer as a means for social inclusion and believe the game can serve as a force that empowers others—including many youths—to be their best on and off the field. Read more about Showunmi’s story and his commitment to fútbol in the Naples community beginning on page 78. Another person serving up sports—this time tennis—to transform lives is Emilio Sanchez, CEO and cofounder of Emilio Sanchez Academy, which has locations abroad and in the United States, including here in Naples. Through this academy, Sanchez, a former professional player, has created an innovative model that blends tennis and education to create opportunities for the students enrolled there. While tennis is a critical component, so too is teaching values of respect, effort, and discipline. Turn to page 94 to read about Sanchez and his unique athletic-based academy. Tennis great Billie Jean King perhaps said it best: “Sports teaches you character, it teaches you to play by the rules, it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose—it teaches you about life.” As you flip through the pages that follow, we hope you enjoy reading about a few individuals in our area who have used or are using athletics to advance altruism. Game on!

FROM THE PUBLISHER

A HEARTFELT

HELLO

JESSI NORVELL OF MEGAN DIPIERO PHOTOGRAPHY

When my family and I moved from the New England area to Naples eight years ago, I was truly excited about what the future held. After my husband, Jason, and I decided to make the big move, I left my job working at a publishing company outside of Boston in search of employment here in Naples. At one point, I remember sitting in my aunt’s living room here, where a glossy Naples Illustrated sat on her coffee table. She very directly asked me: “Well, Meegan, what type of job do you see yourself doing here in Naples?” Without hesitation, I pointed to the beautiful cover displayed in front of me and replied, “I hope I can work for that publication one day.” That was the start of it all, I suppose. And now, here I sit, writing to you as Naples Illustrated’s new publisher, after working for the magazine in a sales-based role for four years. I could not be more grateful, humbled, or excited about this new position. After visiting Naples my entire life and residing here nearly a decade, I can say this community has truly won me over. It’s wonderful to live in paradise, and many people I’ve met over the years I consider family. Truly, the word “community” fits this area. It’s difficult to match the generosity and philanthropy that take place here, and people are genuinely interested in the happenings—including the successes and challenges—of the people they meet. Locals are always the best advicegivers, and the tourists who visit marvel at our area’s myriad offerings, including of course the immense natural beauty surrounding us. I have great enthusiasm for this September issue, which largely centers around athletics. Sports have always been a big part of my life. Like many others, I grew up watching my favorite teams (the Bruins, the Red Sox, and the Patriots). It’s hard to resist the enthusiasm of it all. Plus, my two children, Callahan and Lilyana, have always played sports, including lacrosse and golf. In this issue, we bring you a range of stories that feature football, soccer, tennis, and volleyball greats. They’re all sports titans, but what’s remarkable about the individuals highlighted is the ways they’ve used their athletic-related superpowers to interact with others—on and off game fields and courts. While Kaleigh Grover—my highly esteemed predecessor and good friend—left big shoes to fill, as your new publisher, I’m eager to continue the wonderful work you’ve come to expect from us here at Naples Illustrated. Here’s to kicking off September!

PLANTING ROOTS IN NAPLES Continued

After years of successfully operating from Greenwich, Connecticut, Cocoon Gallery relocated their woodshop operations to the Naples Design District, establishing a 25,000-square-foot shop within walking distance of their gallery, which has been open on Fifth Avenue South since 2020. The woodshop, which includes a custom-made kiln designed to accommodate giant slabs of wood, is where Cocoon’s artisans create their live-edge furniture and decor from exotic woods. Buyers are invited to visit the woodshop to select various raw materials from which custom pieces are created. Visits are by appointment and include an opportunity to watch the artisans at work. A licensed importer of exotic wood from Southeast Asia, Cocoon Gallery uses wood that is sustainably harvested; only fallen trees are sourced, and a tree is planted for each tree harvested for the company. COMMUNITY COURTESY OF COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

EMPOWERING WOMEN and Inspiring Change

I

n existence since 1996, the Women’s Foundation of Collier County (WFCC) continues with its mission to be a catalyst for change in the lives of women and girls in Collier County through grantmaking, advocacy, and education. The Women Lifting Women (WLW) campaign came about after an extensive, detailed, and comprehensive needs study. There are three components of the campaign: to address homelessness and isolation affecting senior women, to empower young women to face everyday challenges so they can move forward with confidence in their career paths, and to grow the organization’s endowment to $5 million to support the foundation’s work in perpetuity. Gather for Good is yet another recently

launched campaign. It encourages local women to host brunch, golf outings, book clubs, or sip-and-shop events with their close friends with the intent to support the WLW campaign. An intimate party format is the perfect place to raise awareness and financial support for troubling trends, like homelessness. A conversation-andcocktails event cohosted by Elizabeth A. Star

and Melanie Sabelhaus at Marissa Collections raised $130,000 in one evening. The organization created a handy planning kit to help hostesses seamlessly execute their events, including a vendor resource list for everything from invitations to photographers. To date more than $600,000 has been raised to support this campaign. (wfcollier.org) —G.S.

INSIDER GOLF

More than 21 years Raymond Floyd ago, Raymond Floyd, golf champion and course architect, designed the Raptor Bay Golf Club course in Bonita Springs. At the time, he revolutionized golf course design by creating a course with no rough and no formal bunkers. Floyd completely retired in 2013—even though his design team continued to tempt him with design projects. When the London Bay Development Group purchased the almost 500-acre property along Estero Bay (Florida’s first designated aquatic preserve) in 2020, Floyd was a natural choice to participate in reimagining the 18-hole golf course, as well as to help design a new ninehole short course.

The new Zimmermann boutique at Waterside Shops reflects a mix of vintage and modern elements, offering designs such as the Celestial Frill mini (below).

With its emphatic sage green storefront, the newly opened Zimmermann boutique is easily spotted at Waterside Shops. Founded in 1991 by sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann, the luxury Australian brand stays true to its original vision: sophisticated femininity. The interior decor of the boutique is as beautiful as the items it sells. The simple yet elegant space hosts a mixture of vintage and modern elements, as well as colorful artwork by Australian artists. Browse the chic vacation-themed space and take yourself on a romantic journey as you peruse pieces from the latest collection. (zimmermann.com) –G.S.

PLAY BY THE BAY

“I always liked the concept for Raptor Bay,” admits Floyd, “you get around quicker and the day is shorter.” After learning the developers were staying true to the same philosophy of design, he knew he wanted to be involved in the second goround. He was also impressed that a more casual style of golf would be promoted—one where flipflops, family, and fun would be encouraged. The official ground-breaking occurred in June; the revamped 18-hole course, which will be extended from a 6,500- to 7,000-yard championship course, and the new short course, are estimated to be completed in early 2023. The golf course will remain open to the public. The Raptor Bay name will retire; the revamped course will be known as Saltleaf Golf Preserve. The name Saltleaf honors the bay’s mangroves— ancient, protected trees that filter the estuary’s water, releasing salt onto their leaves in tiny crystals. (saltleaf.com) —G.S.

How did you start your multifaceted platform that promotes size inclusivity and empowers women of all sizes?

What is the mission behind your cult favorite beauty brand Megababe?

I started my blog, The 12ishStyle, to help women who were a size 12-plus find stylish clothing. Once this began to take off, I realized most women, regardless of their size, were also unhappy with their bodies. I wanted to help change that narrative, which is what I aim to do through my blog, Instagram (@katiesturino), podcast, and solution-oriented beauty brand, Megababe.

Our mission at Megababe is to help tackle “taboo” body issues and provide effective solutions for people to feel more comfortable and confident in their own skin. Things like thigh chafe, boob sweat, and B.O. are typically known as taboo topics that people don’t discuss. But in reality these are everyday issues women face. I love being able to create products that solve these problems, like our Thigh Rescue chafe stick, Bust Dust, and our full line of clean deodorant, like our newly launched Cream Deo.

Your #SuperSizeTheLook and #MakeMySize content series have created a body positive environment on social media. How did the idea for these come about?

#SuperSizeTheLook kicked off in 2015 to show that style has no size. It’s a weekly series where I re-create the look of a celebrity or public figure whose style I admire. #SuperSizeTheLook is never about who wore it better, because that mindset only keeps us down and pits women against each other. My #MakeMySize campaign is when I try on the biggest size a brand offers just to shed light on how small it is on me. It’s a way for me to speak up to these brands in hopes they extend their sizing, and some brands have actually listened, which has been really rewarding.

REAL TALK WITH...

Katie Sturino

For this body acceptance advocate, author, and entrepreneur, confidence is the most important accessory BY KATHERINE LANDE

I’m really into self-care! I love taking care of my skin and daily wellness rituals like meditation using my Insight Timer app, morning walks on the beach, and [stopping] working at 7 p.m. My nighttime skin care routine is always a must—my face is always glowing before bed, and I wake up looking new! I’m loving the Sunday Riley Good Genes lactic acid treatment right now. What’s an unexpected lesson you learned when writing your book, Body Talk?

What would you tell your 18-year-old self today?

I would tell her to put her confidence on first. Truly, what people react to is confidence, and when you’re not confident, people pick up on it.

Describe your self-care routine or recommendations.

Megababe, Katie Sturino’s cult favorite beauty brand, helps people feel more comfortable and confident in their own skin with an array of products that tackle “taboo” body issues.

It was quite hard for me emotionally to relive some of the stuff in Body Talk. You’d figure that after all of this work throughout the years, I’d be numb to it and it would be easy, but it wasn’t. Overall, it was a really great healing process for me getting everything out there. I have loved connecting with women about the book and their own journeys.

THIS POWERHOUSE INGREDIENT CAN RESTORE HYDRATION, SOOTHE INFLAMMATION, AND IMPROVE ELASTICITY BY TRISTAN DYER

While many skin care trends come and go, hyaluronic acid has lived up to the hype—helping skin to retain moisture while preventing fine lines and wrinkles. Naturally found in the fluids within our joints and eyes, hyaluronic acid can be derived from both animal and plant sources, with the vast majority coming from the latter via a process known as microbial fermentation. Most commonly applied as a daily topical treatment, hyaluronic acid also has the ability to reduce swelling and dermatitis. Take the plunge and revitalize your skin with these highly regarded products.

F

our years ago, Tom Lykos noticed a new trend as president of The Lykos Group: More and more of his empty-nest clients were requesting a residence where they could live and sleep comfortably on the ground floor while their visiting children and grandchildren could enjoy a relaxing lounge space on the second level. More changes were driven by the pandemic. “People learned they didn’t have to go out all the time. That meant buyers wanted more entertainment features, especially in the outdoor living and pool area and indoor and outdoor spaces where they could eat meals together,” says the award-winning Naples-based residential design/building/remodeling company owner. In response, Lykos collaborated with a team that included an architect and interior, kitchen, and bath designers to create a home that would surpass his clients’ requests. He built this dream spec home in the boater’s paradise of Marco Island on a canal accessible to the Gulf of Mexico. 54

The exterior echoes designs found in seaside towns along the eastern seaboard. The front elevation is partially clad in bright, all-white stucco punctuated by areas of board-and-batten and wood siding, while the stormhardy cement roof tiles replicate cedar shake shingles.

MULTIGENERATIONAL LIVING As envisioned, this coastal contemporary, two-story home provides gracious living on the main floor and comfortable, well-appointed multigenerational living on the second floor. “The upstairs in this home is not just a collection of bedrooms. It has a family room and a kitchenette—almost like a complete home on the second floor so people can get away but still be in the same house,” notes Lykos. “This is what everybody wants today—a hybrid of existing styles that are favorable to luxury materials imbued with a clean, sophisticated look that is not overly formal,” explains Laura Parsons, president of Pure Design of Naples. Parsons selected all the surfaces and interior solid doors and participated in decisions impacting the aesthetics of the facade. Inside, arrayed in a neutral palette in a soft contemporary, coastal style, the 5,000-plus-square-foot, feature-laden residence is open and airy. Placing the master bedroom on the ground level allows the homeowners to be completely at home on the main floor. Every room in the house is thoughtfully designed, and no area exemplifies this more than the elegant kitchen. The double-stacked Shaker cabinetry was designed by Ivonne McCormick, principal for Hightide Cabinetry & Design in Fort Myers. Topped with a misty white marble—used throughout much of the home because of its visual cohesiveness and pleasing aesthetic—the oversize, duck-egg blue kitchen island is stunning. High-end Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances,

The second floor features four bedrooms and four bathrooms, a family room with a foosball table, kitchenette, covered balcony, and laundry room—all affording privacy and convenience for guests.

apart from the range, are hidden behind paneled doors. A simplified version of a classic design, the stainless-steel range hood implies a commercial feel. “The kitchen is all about a clean canvas, natural elements, and slick finishes with a nod to a natural coastal vibe and a little glamour here and there,” says Parsons. “It would look good in the Panhandle, the Hamptons, or any coastal area.” Upstairs, a spacious family room off the four en-suite guest bedrooms is appointed with comfortable furnishings, a large-screen television, and a private, covered balcony. Guests awaken to a kitchenette equipped with a refrigerator, sink, and coffee bar. Outdoor living areas have always been considered an extension of the home in Southwest Florida, and these spaces are treated today with the same attention to furnishings and finishes as the interior. In the outdoor dining area, the tongue-and-groove ceiling is sheathed in a rich espresso-bean-colored prefinished outdoor wood that contrasts crisply with the white stucco. The pool boasts various levels for sunbathing, while the porch’s Super Screen offers both sun and pest protection. “The rooms in this house are not just big rooms; they are designed for how people live, such as the utility room that holds an extra refrigerator for the family or the kitchen that was designed for easy cleanup. Grandchildren can be upstairs watching a movie while the adults are downstairs having a conversation,” says Lykos. «

STRIKING SCULPTURES NEED NOT BE CONFINED TO INDOOR SPACES BY NANCI THEORET

Your home’s alfresco areas are brimming with opportunities for original fine-art sculptures to elevate the intention, introspection, and intrigue of a space while reflecting your taste and personality. Ani Zimonyi, gallery manager of The Englishman Fine Art in Naples, says art collectors are displaying limited-edition sculptures throughout their outdoor areas. These pieces can be placed in dedicated sculpture gardens; they can also serve as a focal point in a garden or courtyard, a statement piece by a swimming pool, or a grand first impression near a home’s entry. Many of the internationally acclaimed artists represented by the gallery sculpt in gleaming marine-grade stainless steel and bronze—in its purest form or patinaed in wood-like textures—making the works weather- and outdoor-friendly. “A lot of times, people are thinking about a space and just don’t know what to do with 60

it. They tell us they’ve been looking forever for something for their courtyard or another outdoor area,” says Zimonyi. She adds that The Englishman features outdoor-appropriate pieces ranging from 14 inches to more than 6.5 feet tall. “They’ll use our bigger pieces in a courtyard and the smaller pieces mounted into the pool, ledge, or a niche.” The gallery helps clients identify the best locations for sculptures as well as placement for optimal viewing, natural sunlight, and nighttime illumination. These fine-art sculptures can set the mood for each space. For example, Israeli sculptor Ruth Bloch’s elongated bronze figures express joy and optimism and New York artist Jim Rennert’s figural bronzes convey whimsical tonguein-cheek humor, while Czech Republic– born, Florida-based sculptor Peter Garaj’s smaller-scale, ultra-contemporary, industrial stainless-steel forms echo the sleek architectural aesthetic and interior design

now popular in Naples homes. “You have to consider how a sculpture will interact with its space,” explains Zimonyi. Stainless steel tends to stand out and brighten an area, while natural bronze is more likely to blend into a landscaped background. Works by Bloch, Rennert, and Garaj have a public outdoor presence spread out along Fifth Avenue South as part of the 30-piece sculpture walk created from the private collection of Naples entrepreneurs and philanthropists David and Jerri Hoffmann. These sculptures, says Zimonyi, are often a starting point for patrons in search of that elusive statement piece. Rennert’s works poking lighthearted fun at corporate America are particularly popular with Naples-based former CEOs and their spouses, says Zimonyi, noting these customers purchase 24- to 36-inch-tall Rennert maquettes to display on pedestals

in a courtyard. The former business leaders “relate to Jim’s sculptures because they used to be like that before they retired to Naples,” she says. Bloch celebrates love and family in her Long Fellows figurative bronze collections, with recent works incorporating bright paint colors in balloons, clothing, and handbags. Her full-size seated figures are ideal for low-slung gardens and open-air sitting areas in need of a vertical focal point. Her limited-edition, 34-inch-tall High Rise series features a gold-patinaed feminine form perched atop a gold-finished base resembling wood. The gallery also represents British artist Ian Edwards, whose evocative, often esoteric bronze figurative sculptures explore the emotions and aspirational endeavors of the human spirit. His works, which capture the journey of life in a deeply contemplative manner, include the 5.25-foot Leap Within

Faith, a swan-diving feminine nude, and The Calling, a 6-foot male form seemingly emerging from the primordial ooze. Says Zimonyi, “The Calling is certainly a piece for a collector who can associate with evolving from the earth—perhaps a metamorphosis or evolu-

tion of the soul. It is certainly powerful.” The gallery’s limited-edition, original fineart sculptures, with 2 to 15 pieces in a series, range from $9,000 to about $150,000. “These are all stellar works that draw attention,” Zimonyi says. «

EUROPEAN LEGENDS CELEBRATE A RETURN TO EUROPE BY STAYING IN SOME OF THE CONTINENT’S MOST FABLED—AND FASHIONABLE—PROPERTIES

BELMOND

BY PAUL RUBIO

CIPRIANI, A BELMOND HOTEL, VENICE The essence of Italy’s la dolce vita

A bridge-linked maze of Renaissance-era palazzos, Gothic edifices, Byzantine domes, and Baroque buildings, Venice rises as a man-made water world reflecting architectural and cultural influences that span nearly a millennium. To fully embrace the magic of these history-steeped islands, head south of St. Mark’s Square to the isle of Giudecca, where Cipriani, A Belmond Hotel delivers the best in Venetian views, old-school glamour, and modern hospitality. Void of the crowds and confined spaces of Venice proper, sprawling Cipriani promises comforts uncommon to the region. Think: oversize guest rooms and suites, an Olympic-size swimming pool, artstrewn gardens, traditional vineyards, and personality-driven spots for indulging in Italian gastronomy and mixology. Days here begin with strong coffee

and regional delicacies at waterside Caffè San Giorgio, cozy under an umbrella-capped table, admiring the gondolas and wooden boats that float by. Board the five-minute water taxi to Venice’s main island, where ambles through labyrinthine alleys lead to unexpected discoveries in history, retail therapy, and Instagram-worthy moments. Come early afternoon, don’t miss the chance to lunch light—and drink heavy—at Cip’s Club, the property’s famed overwater restaurant with unmatched panoramas of the Venetian skyline. Then, relax in your elegantly appointed guest room or suite, enjoying the breeze from your balcony or terrace—every unit has one—or capitalize on the myriad alfresco amenities before primping for a night of Michelin-starred cuisine, theater, opera, and/or cocktails at celeb-frequented Harry’s Bar. LE MEURICE, PARIS

Paris’ most coveted address

Clockwise from above: Tuileries Garden; Restaurant le Meurice Alain Ducasse; view from the Belle Etoile suite; an Executive Room, Park View.

Twelve exalted properties in the City of Light carry official Palace status, a distinction above five stars and indicative of a starring role in French heritage, culture, and gastronomy. Among this elite group, none garners more global reverence than Le Meurice, Paris’ original palace hotel—a destination that’s equal parts ultra-luxury and living museum. Since its debut in 1835, Le Meurice has commanded the spotlight, shaped by the dignitaries, artists, and thinkers who’ve called the palace home (names like Dalí, Picasso, and Warhol) as well as pioneering achievements in hospitality. For example, Le Meurice was the first hotel in Paris to have a telephone (circa 1889) and the first to install a private bathroom in every guest room and suite (circa 1907). Nowadays, the property remains equally relevant by offering the timeless, distinctly Parisian stay that travelers desire. Renovated in 2019, guest rooms and suites epitomize the Parisian dream, with handcrafted classic French-style furniture and swoon-worthy views; book an Executive Room, Park View for a panorama that spans Tuileries Garden, the Louvre, Place de la Concorde, and the Eiffel Tower. Multiple Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse oversees the property’s dining in its entirety, meaning every meal is one to remember. Meanwhile, the hotel’s Dalí-inspired common spaces invite hotel guests and visitors—dressed to kill in haute couture—to sit, pose, and ruminate on the splendor that surrounds. However, the focus here isn’t so much on history as it is on the joie de vivre of today’s Paris, as evidenced in the amenities and prime location. Sip and savor while mingling with A-listers at Le Joy, an open-air garden restaurant at the hotel’s core. Head to the design-forward subterranean spa and pool for pampering between sightseeing. Or simply venture outside for immediate access to the Champs-Élysées, Arc de Triomphe, and Avenue Montaigne, Paris’ most esteemed high street. (hotelsbarriere.com) «

PARK HYATT VIENNA

In recent years, Vienna has gained traction as a capital of European cool, with plenty of oldmeets-new marvels to prove it. Case in point: Park Hyatt Vienna, an exceptional adaptive reuse of the Bank of Austria’s former headquarters in the heart of Vienna. Behind the stately earlytwentieth-century facade of the UNESCO-listed building, uncover a hotel that balances finance and history with finesse. Underground, the original floor-to-ceiling vault door opens to a strong room aglow in blues and yellows, anchored by a sleek swimming pool and flanked by a state-of-the-art gymnasium and world-class spa. At ground level, the cashier’s hall—with original stained-glass pieces and exquisite marble columns—now houses The Bank Brasserie and Bar, serving new interpretations of brasserie classics. A central marble staircase and glass elevator leads to 143 rooms and suites exuding Viennese sophistication, all with large closets and bathrooms and embellished in dark woods, mother-of-pearl, and marble. Thanks to the building’s original design, units on the first and second floors boast double-story ceilings, branding them the most coveted within Park Hyatt’s inventory. The former bank’s riches spill to the surrounding area, too. Just beyond the doors of the Park Hyatt Vienna, discover such renowned sights as Café Central, a storied hangout once frequented by the likes of Freud and Trotsky; the Hofburg, the former Imperial Palace of the Habsburg dynasty; and St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna’s most adorned religious structure. Caribbean QUEEN NASSAU’S BAHA MAR CHAMPIONS THE EVOLUTION OF MEGARESORT CHIC BY PAUL RUBIO

When the $4.2 billion excess that is Baha Mar debuted on Nassau’s Cable Beach in 2017, it revolutionized the concept of a megaresort. Despite its ambitious size, the property shined for its top-notch service, quality brands, and world-class experiences. Five years later, Baha Mar continues to wow with new activations, eateries, and events, plus an array of posh accommodations. Baha Mar boasts numerous room and suite structures across its three hotel brands: Grand Hyatt, SLS, and Rosewood. Chief among these offerings are the 6,200-square-foot oceanside six-bedroom villas at Rosewood Baha Mar, which are the resort’s most lavish accommodations to date. When venturing outside, consider spending ample time at the new 15-acre Baha Bay, home to a sprawling “luxury waterpark” that speaks to Baha Mar’s larger-than-life allure. Sure, there are plenty of thrilling slides—don’t miss the high-speed Dueling Riptide

Coaster—plus a 500,000-gallon wave pool, a lazy river, and a surf simulator. But throw in some gourmet food options, an outdoor casino, and a beach club (equipped with full-service private cabanas, hammocks, and two infinity-edge swimming pools) and discover exactly how a waterpark garners elite status. Augmenting an already impressive collection of more than 45 restaurants and bars are two of the biggest names in the industry. Chef Marcus Samuelsson puts a Southern spin on Bahamian cuisine with Marcus at Baha Mar Fish + Chop House, featuring crave-worthy dishes such as conch croquettes and spicy prawns complemented by juicy fried chicken and marshmallow-crusted sweet potato mash. A second outpost by Samuelsson, the more casual Streetbird on the Beach, serves the likes of crispy chicken sandwiches (slathered in hot pepper mayo) and calypso fritters (a conch–salt fish hybrid) from a food truck anchored in the sand. Icon Daniel Boulud imports a taste of France with Café Boulud, The Bahamas. Here, the marquee chef peppers a menu of French classics and signature dishes

(hello, Tournedos Rossini) with Bahamian catch and produce. As the world embraces the return of person-to-person interaction, Baha Mar follows suit with daily instructor-led programming. Try the one-of-a-kind Flamingo Yoga, stretching and planking among the property’s resident flock. Choose from a roster of art classes conducted at The Current Gallery & Art Center, including botanical leaf printing, landscape painting, and acrylic pouring. Hone your cooking skills with sessions for the entire family, or select others catering to just adults or kids. Alternatively, craft your own schedule of active and leisurely pursuits, capitalizing on the surfeit of amenities. With multiple swimming pools, the Caribbean’s only flagship ESPA spa, the 18-hole Jack Nicklaus signature design Royal Blue Golf Course, the largest casino in the Caribbean, and a shopping arcade of 30 high-end brands, everything from fun in the sun to retail therapy is on tap. Beyond its glorious day-to-day delights, Baha Mar has found a niche hosting events that appeal to gourmands, sports enthusiasts, philanthropists, and more. One highlight from the past year was A Taste of SLS at Baha Mar, a decadent dining experience curated by the award-winning personalities behind the property’s restaurants, coupled with an intimate performance by musician John Legend. For 2022, the event is rebranding as The Bahamas Culinary & Arts Festival, slated for October 21-23. Another annual favorite is the Baha Mar Cup, a celebrity tennis fundraiser that last year saw Andy Roddick, Victoria Azarenka, and Mark Knowles battle it out in the name of charity while also engaging in matches with attendees and coaching local school children. The next Baha Mar Cup is scheduled for December 9-11, with another all-star lineup set to participate.

Clockwise from top left: Living room, infinity pool, and deck of a six-bedroom oceanside villa; food and drink offerings at chef Marcus Samuelsson’s Marcus at Baha Mar Fish + Chop House, plus restaurant interior; Café Boulud dining room.

Without resting on the laurels of its initial success, Baha Mar surfaces as the pinnacle of megaresort chic, giving travelers the luxury of choice. This idyllic island getaway promises endless combinations of escapism, excitement, and indulgences, resulting in a memorable vacation for every personality within today’s travel set. HIGH ROAD

Mr. Zimmer’s OPUS BMW’S ALL-ELECTRIC IX50 TAKES A HANS-ON APPROACH TO SOUNDING SPEEDY BY HOWARD WALKER

T

he music of German composer Hans Zimmer is legendary. Over the last 35 years, he’s penned some of the greatest film scores of all time, from Rain Man and The Lion King, to The Dark Knight and Dune. Now there’s one more musical arrangement he can add to his repertoire: BMW’s all-new, all-electric iX SUV. Yep, every synthesized whirr, whee, whoop, and whizz is courtesy of Mr. Z. The BMW Group Sound Design department teamed up with the Academy Award winner to create a few special sound effects for the iX—because you wouldn’t want an electric car to be totally silent, right? When you dial up Sport mode and hit the gas, the fizzing electric motors are accompanied by a soaring crescendo that’s part Dyson Airblade, part Tron. Had it been up to me, I might have gone for a Jack Sparrow “arrr” from Pirates of the Caribbean (Zimmer composed the scores for those movies, too). Sounds aside, this iX xDrive50 is an awesome addition to BMW’s growing fleet of all-electric newcomers. About the size of the popular X5 sport-ute, the iX distinguishes itself with its jaw-descending, head-

68

rotating, what-the-heck-were-they-thinking design. To call it bold is like saying Adele can carry a tune. However, it’s far from cute, with a multitude of lumps, bumps, and creases, as well as humongous kidneys on the nose and a full-diaper look at the rear end. That being said, when it comes to electric vehicles, looking different is key. You’re driving the future, so why not make the vehicle look like it’s from the future? The iX is nothing less than Ziggy Stardust on wheels. Two versions of this iX are on offer. The xDrive50 kicks off at $83,200, packs a 516-horsepower punch, and can run for up to 324 miles on a charge. Its crazy-fast brother is the iX M60, with a maximum hp of 610, 811 lb-ft of torque, 280 miles of range, and a $108,900-andup sticker. Let’s save the electric M60 Frankenbeemer for another day and revel in the equally eye-watering performance of the xDrive50. For those who have yet to experience the tingling delights of electric power, you’re in for a treat. The way this iX 50 catapults off the line, slingshots past dawdling traffic, and acts like a four-wheeled extra from Top Gun: Maverick is breathtaking. Zero to 60 in 4.4 seconds? That’ll do nicely.

Yes, the ride can get a little firm and fidgety. And while the frameless door windows look cool, they create a bit more wind noise than you might expect from a luxury SUV. But piloting this thing is a delight. Inside, the iX is as funky and futuristic as its exterior—just peep the hexagon-shaped wheel. I love the floating glass display that sprawls across the dash, the crystal-glass seat adjuster, the window and info-

VIKING SPIRIT

SWEDEN’S J CRAFT TORPEDO COMBINES ITALIAN STYLE WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY BY HOWARD WALKER

G

aze longingly at the gorgeous lines of this Swedish-built J Craft Torpedo cruiser, with its mirror-varnished mahogany and 1960s elegance, and the phrase “fit for a king” might come to mind. Actually, it is fit for a king. Back in 1999, His Royal Highness Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden, took delivery of the very first J Craft. He still owns it today and reportedly spends summer vacations cruising around the Mediterranean. Unashamedly inspired by that long-out-of-production icon of the ’60s, the Italian Riva Aquarama, the J Craft Torpedo is 42 feet of handcrafted style and sophistication, guaranteed to spin heads from the coast of Maine to the Côte d’Azur. And we’re actually on the Côte to try this modern classic in a run from Beaulieu-sur-Mer across to glitzy Monaco, courtesy of our friends at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. Rolls has had a long relationship with J Craft, perhaps because the two companies appeal to the same kind of fun-loving billionaires. Not so long ago, they partnered on a proposal for a matching Torpedo and Phantom drophead coupe, both with the same stealthy black paint,

70

creamy-yellow upholstery, and satin-metal detailing. The carmaker even created a stunning picnic box—complete with bespoke flatware—that could go from car to boat. Pass the Grey Poupon, please. And just like any Rolls-Royce, the J Craft is a labor of love for a passionate, dedicated workforce. It takes a small team of artisans more than 8,000 hours, or a full year, to build each Torpedo at J Craft’s factory on the rugged, windswept Swedish island of Gotland. Each cruiser is fashioned from sustainably sourced West African mahogany that’s formed by steam bending—in much the same way the Swedish Vikings built their longboats back in the day. But unlike those wooden longboats, the Torpedo uses vacuum-bagged vinylester and fiberglass for its deep-V hull. See the finished J Craft bobbing gently along the restaurant-filled Beaulieu-sur-Mer waterfront, and it’s nothing less than a piece of art. It’s just beautiful, from that glorious arched rear transom to the pinched stern that flows forward into a wide, curvy bow, not to mention the quartet of porthole-style engine vents at the back. Step aboard—shoes off, of course—and tread lightly across the

diamond-quilted sun pad, step down into the spacious cockpit, and soak in the detailing. Made by the Italian company Nardi, the leather-rimmed helm is a replica of the one used in Ferrari’s legendary ’60s sports cars. While the Torpedo may look like an open day boat designed for soaking up the Med sun, there’s actually a very roomy cabin for four beneath that striped teak-and-holly foredeck. It comes with air-conditioning, a head with a shower, and plenty of closet space. At the twist of a key, the Torpedo’s pair of Volvo Penta turbo diesels, hooked up POWER FILE to IPS 650 pod drives with forward-facing PRICE: FROM $1.5 MILLION props, burst into life. There’s a choice of LENGTH: 41 FEET, 4 INCHES four Volvo engines on offer, but our blueBEAM: 11 FEET, 9 INCHES hulled Torpedo RS has the most potent DRAFT: 3.12 FEET POWER: 2 X 480-HP VOLVO 480-hp versions, which can punch it to a IPS 650 TOP SPEED: 47 KNOTS top speed of 47 knots. WHY WE LOVE IT: BECAUSE ITS As we head out into the bay and pour LOOKS ALONE ARE ENOUGH on the power, the Torpedo rises easily and TO STIR YOUR SOUL. smoothly onto the plane, with only the dis-

tant muffled hum from the Volvos under the back deck. At 2,000 rpm, the speedo is showing 20 knots. At just 2,600 rpm, the boat is at its 30-knot cruising speed, where it’ll go for more than 280 nautical miles on a tank. It slices through the waves like its namesake torpedo. Flick over that lovely helm, and it leans easily and comfortably into a tight turn. At full power, 47 knots feel like nothing. J Craft is currently focusing on the U.S. market—the Torpedo was one of the stars of this year’s Palm Beach International Boat Show— but order one now and you’ll still wait more than a year. Maybe offering a king’s ransom, or having a word with King Gustaf himself, might get you higher up on the list. «

MARK DANTONIO CAMARADERIE AND WINNING MAKE GREAT MEMORIES, BUT HE FINDS RETIREMENT HAS MANY PERKS NI: What made you want to go into coaching? Dantonio: After I got done playing college football at the University of South Carolina, I thought coaching might be right for me. It was something I was passionate about and seemed like it wouldn’t really be like work. Plus, I like watching people grow. I love the Xs and Os, but the camaraderie of it all is what drew me. You’re the winningest football coach in Michigan State University (MSU) history. What’s your fondest memory from this tenure? It’s hard to say because there are so many people involved, whether it be all the coaches or players. Winning the Rose Bowl was a great one, along with the wins over the University of Michigan. The latter were huge program wins and set up Michigan State football for the future. Along the way, all I can say is there were a lot of people working in the same direction. So, maybe the Rose Bowl win. Maybe the first Big Ten Championship. Maybe the second. More generally, it’s winning. Winning is always good, and it’s hard to win. Do you have any games that stand out as favorites? From when I arrived at MSU in 2007, there were certain games from each season of that era that were pivotal. There were a lot of walk-off wins, where we won at the end of the game. There were some walk-off losses, too, but a lot more wins. Winning at Michigan the first time was big, of course. There were a lot of great moments, but honestly, I really feel like I’m doing a disservice to the players who played by picking only one. Who were your coaching mentors? I have more than one. First off, though, is Dale Evans. He was my college position coach at the University of South Carolina. Also, a guy by the name of Randy Hart; he initially brought me to [The] Ohio State University as a graduate assistant coach. He was instrumental in getting me to the place where [my career] really sprang from. Certainly Jim Tressel. I was at Youngstown State University and later, of course, at Ohio State with him. Also Nick Saban—I worked with him for five years and learned a ton of football and organizational skills. The latter applies to Jim Tressel, too. And I would say Bob Goin, former athletic director

at the University of Cincinnati, who gave me a head coaching opportunity. There were others along the way, but those five individuals were crucial. Are you involved in football since retirement? I’ve done some clinics and leadership talks. I’ve been offered various positions in a consulting capacity. But to me, those jobs demand a certain level of commitment, so I try to do what I can for people who ask. I’ve taken trips to visit different programs and preseason camps to get my football fix. Are you able to kick back, relax, and watch games like a fan would, or are you still dissecting plays and managing the clock in your mind? Yeah, that’s interesting. I guess it depends on the moment. Sometimes, I find myself questioning a particular play, or on the flip side, admiring something that was really well done. Then, other times, I miss a play here or there to go get some chips. It’s not as much life and death anymore. Is there anything you absolutely don’t miss about football? I don’t miss having to be 24/7, 365. Because that’s what it has become, and that’s what it is. Certainly, I don’t miss losing a

football game. And I don’t miss some of the necessary administrative tasks that pulled me away from my own coaching to-do lists.

What are your hobbies here? I golf quite a bit. I love to walk our dog along the lake, and I exercise every day. I spend a lot of time with our two daughters and our grandchildren. That’s been great. Becky and I have met many good people here, so we do social things. After a lot of 80-hour work weeks, I will say this about retirement: Everyone should try it once.

GARY PINKEL AS A FOOTBALL COACH AND AS A RETIREE, HELPING KIDS MATTERS— AND NOW, SO DOES TAKING TIME TO TAKE CARE OF HIMSELF NI: What was your college football experience like? Pinkel: I went to Kent State University, where I played tight end. From there, the rest is kind of history. Don James became the head coach there. My teammates included a guy by the name of Nick Saban and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jack Lambert. We were all part of Kent State’s first Mid-American Conference Championship. I’ve been very blessed. I’ve always been surrounded by good people in football.

Many people contributed, and I recognize and appreciate that.

How did you get into coaching? I really wanted to be a high school administrator because I’ve always liked to be around and help kids. But I spoke to my college head coach Don James about coaching and became a graduate assistant coach at Kent State after I graduated.

When you watch a football game now, do you find yourself managing the game in your head? To be honest, I do. I find myself tracking the down and distance, field position, personnel sets, how many time-outs are left—that’s what I did on the headset on game day. Funny, I was watching football with my wife, Missy, and she told me to quiet down because she wanted to hear the commentator. I looked at her, and jokingly asked, “Do you think that commentator knows more than I do?”

Do you have a favorite coaching memory? Oh my gosh—that’s difficult. When I was at the University of Toledo, during my last year as head coach there, we played Penn State University at Penn State. We ended up winning the game, which was a huge upset. This had a large impact for the MidAmerican Conference, let alone the University of Toledo. Also, when I was at Toledo in 1995, we were undefeated and won the Las Vegas Bowl in an overtime game. What’s interesting, however, is that it was the first overtime game of a major college football bowl game. There was no tie—we played it out. So, my goodness, it was amazing. At Mizzou, we played in the Cotton Bowl and won. That was a great one, too. You were selected for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame this year. How did you react when you learned about this? One day, not uncommon, a box came to my doorstep. But when I opened it, there was something that read, “Of the 5.54 million who have played and coached college football since 1869, only 1,038 players and 223 coaches have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Welcome to the club.” Immediately, I just started crying. I never really thought I’d get in. However, this is about a lot more people than just Gary Pinkel.

Are you still involved in football in any way? No, not really. I was asked early on about doing some radio and TV commentating. But that sounds too busy. I’m a cancer survivor, and that’s not how I want to spend my time right now. I have a foundation dedicated to helping kids called GP M.A.D.E. Foundation. I spend a good portion of my day working on that.

What was your favorite thing about coaching football? Through my mentors Don James and Dick Fortner, my high school coach, I learned that coaching is an opportunity to help young people. It’s a chance to help teach them to be more responsible, to always respect women, to be on time, to be accountable, to be hard-working. At the end of the day, I really

cared about the players and tried to help them be better people. You retired from the University of Missouri shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. What was that like? I was diagnosed with lymphoma on my birthday in 2015. I had just signed a six-year contract at Mizzou. But that’s when I decided I needed to use my time right; I wasn’t going to spend it working incredibly long weeks and frequently traveling. After the 2015 season, I retired. It was something I had to do for myself. You have homes in Missouri, too, but where do you reside in Naples? We used to live in North Naples. We had a condo there for about 15 years. Very recently, we built a home in Fiddler’s Creek. We love it there. The people are kind, and it’s great to be close to both downtown and Marco Island. How do you and Missy spend your time when you’re in Southwest Florida? I play some golf. I really try to take care of myself. Missy and I are active. We like to visit different places to sightsee and go to the beach; we really enjoy music and concerts, too. «

NAPLES NEWCOMER ENOCH SHOWUNMI USES SOCCER SAVVY AND BUSINESS ACUMEN TO BOOST BOTH THE SPORT AND THE COMMUNITY

By SETH SOFFIAN Photography by MICHAEL CARONCHI irst things first: Soccer can work—and is working—in America. Growing attendance for professional leagues, strong television ratings for national and international matches, and the game’s universal appeal for players and spectators alike have proved the sport’s viability in communities across the country, including Naples. As fútbol continues its growth in Collier County, some credit for that goes to another source. London-born Enoch Showunmi, a 6-foot, 5-inch former professional player of Nigerian descent with a master’s degree in finance, is part of a group trying to make the Naples United Football Club a unifying source of entertainment and good works. “It’s a pleasure. Absolute pleasure,” Showunmi, 40, says when introduced, oozing charm with his dashing British accent.

Prior to his arrival in Naples, Showunmi had a successful 12-year professional soccer career in England, mostly as a forward.

Although not a household name to American audiences in the same breath as elite international stars, Showunmi had a successful 12-year career in England, mostly as a forward. His days as a pro included playing in the Championship League, England’s secondhighest tier after the Premier League. In Naples, he shares the vision of Naples United founders Veronica Docio and Vicente Sandoval. The Argentinian couple strives to build the organization they launched in 2017 into the kind of community-wide cultural influence all three partners know from their international upbringings. “Our thing is really engaging the community, getting them to our games, and really developing players all the way from youth to our first team,” says Showunmi, who moved from Miami to Naples in 2019 and became club director of Naples United shortly after. “We want to have a hub where the community can come together and enjoy something different that’s not been on the doorstep for residents of Naples and Collier County before.” Naples United already has a winning unit with its adult squad, which plays in the National Premier Soccer League. The NPSL features nearly 100 teams nationwide playing at the top amateur or semiprofessional level. Now the club is rapidly growing its youth squads,

7/26/22 3:30 PM

which launched in earnest just this year. Although previously slowed by COVID-19, the club has grown its youth rosters from a handful of players to about 85 in just half a year, Showunmi notes. That expansion resulted in part because of the appeal of the Paradise Coast Sports Complex, the county’s 180-acre, multipurpose facility that opened in 2020 just north of I-75 off Collier Boulevard, where the club plays. Ultimately slated to encompass 20 athletic fields, the complex boasts locker rooms, covered seating, and a 32-foot, double-sided video screen in its 3,500-seat stadium, among other amenities. “It’s an absolutely beautiful facility,” says Showunmi. He points to home-game crowds of about 500 the last year and a half; the club’s goal is to reach turnouts of 1,500 to 2,000 within a few years. “It started from scratch. We had nothing. No stadium. No pitches. We had to go around to different places to play. Now we have a stadium. We have a home. We’ve gone from basically zero to putting a good product on the field.” COMMITTED TO COMMUNITY Central to Naples United’s growth plans are its outreach efforts, part of which entails providing opportunities to kids and families who

wouldn’t otherwise have access to the club’s after-school programs or more highly skilled academy-level play. “We literally allow all types of players, all types of levels,” says Showunmi, citing endeavors with the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County, as well as potential collaborations with Greater Naples YMCA, Guadalupe Center, area middle schools, and others. Showunmi and his colleagues are dedicated to social inclusion and attracting anybody interested in soccer. “And we’re going to be here to help you develop your game,” he says. Showunmi’s evident passion and authenticity also are contributing to the club’s growth. Believing, as Docio and Sandoval do, that sports clubs can be agents for good in their communities, Showunmi has helped make quick believers of Naples United’s partners. Among those believers is St. Matthew’s House, which provides some financial support, a rarity for the nonprofit. “We’re not in the business of sponsoring other groups,” says Bill Curry, vice president of development for St. Matthew’s House. Curry recently came to Naples after 21 years doing similar work in Chicago, where he witnessed the benefits of sports-related outreach. The Naples soccer group provides civic benefits that support St. Matthew’s House’s primary mission— fighting hunger, homelessness, addiction, and poverty. “We’re in the NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022

business of community impact and seeing lives transformed. And we think Enoch, Veronica, and Naples United are a great partner to do that with,” Curry says. A self-described late-bloomer, Showunmi credits soccer with instilling in him the resilience to continue working hard despite repeated rejections in his bid to reach the professional ranks. It wasn’t until age 21, older than when most players break through, that he finally got that chance. “I always say to the players, ‘You never know when the opportunity is going to rise. You just have to stay ready,’” Showunmi explains. “It changed my life. I was able to travel the world, play in huge stadiums, and now at 40 years old, I’m still involved in the game.” BIG PLANS Using the finance degree he earned during his years playing professionally, Showunmi worked as a business development manager for a hedge fund after retiring from soccer. But he missed the game and soon found himself training and mentoring young players in Miami through Global Soccer Pathways, a separate entity he still operates. When Showunmi and his wife, Gabriella, were starting a family of their own, they wanted to be closer to her family in Naples. Two of her brothers

have lived in the city for more than a decade, one of whom owns and operates several downtown restaurants. With a daughter born in early 2021 strengthening his ties to the area, Showunmi says he’s even more committed to helping build Naples United for the long haul. Docio and Sandoval have brought Showunmi in with an ownership stake in the club. “I really love the leadership of Enoch and Veronica,” says St. Matthew’s House’s Curry. And taking note of Docio’s young kids, he adds, “It’s not like they’re going to be here for nine months [then it’s] time to move on.” Given the growth the club has already seen—and soccer’s continued expansion in the United States— Showunmi and his fellow owners have even bigger things in mind for Naples United. “We’re in a great area between Orlando and Miami,” he says. “There are professional leagues that want to franchise in Naples. If we find the right investors and right people around us, there’s potential to take this club professional. That’s one of our aims. “We’re not in a rush,” he continues. “We always like to take things a step at a time. We want to create a great culture, a great community. But the potential is there. If we can create excitement for the NPSL, just imagine what we can do to create something amazing as a professional team.” «

By GAYLENE SALOMONS “¡Vamos! Let’s go! Yes. That’s it.” Rackets are flying, grunts are uttered, and sweat is dripping. Fluorescent green balls litter the perimeter of court two at the Emilio Sanchez Academy, located just south of Pine Ridge Road in the community known as Naples Bath and Tennis Club. At the center of the activity, directing the players and calling out commands in Spanish, Italian, and English, is a fit, 57-year-old man—the eponymous founder of the academy. The sports world knows Emilio Sanchez best as a former professional tennis player from Spain with celebrity status. Among the many, his wins include five Grand Slam doubles titles and the men’s doubles silver medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. Today, however, the king of the court is known simply as Coach Emilio, and he is doing what he loves best: training kids to excel at life through the sport of tennis. Sanchez first started playing tennis when he was 8 years old at the country club where his family belonged. It wasn’t so much that Sanchez chose tennis; it was the only sport available to play at the club at the time, because, as Sanchez recounts, “the developer had stolen the money and left the country after promising a variety of [sports] options would be available.” An athletic

boy, Sanchez excelled at tennis. So did his siblings—all of whom played at the professional level at one time or another. In fact, his sister, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, at age 17 beat Steffi Graf at the 1989 French Open, setting a record as the youngest female to ever claim a French Open singles victory. (Monica Seles broke the record the following year when she won the title at age 16.) At 19 years of age, Sanchez began playing professional tennis. During his singles career, he won 15 singles titles, playing against such tennis greats as Ivan Lendl and Boris Becker. In men’s doubles, Sanchez captured an astounding 50 men’s titles—44 with partner Sergio Casal; he also claims two Grand Slam mixed-doubles titles. He often played for Spain in international team events and was a member of Spain’s Davis Cup team from the mid ’80s to mid ’90s. He retired from professional play at the age of 33 but found an innovative way to stay involved in the game while helping and mentoring others. Sanchez, alongside his longtime doubles partner, Casal, opened the first Sanchez-Casal Tennis Academy in Barcelona, Spain, in 1998. Their model, primarily targeting secondary students, astutely fused both tennis and academics. It was through Sanchez’s sister’s affiliation with Pepperdine University that he was first exposed to the concept that schooling and sports could be combined. “It was not done in Europe,” he explains, “you choose either one or the other.”

Above: Spanish Davis Cup team members throw captain Emilio Sanchez in the air to celebrate Spain’s 3-1 victory over Argentina in 2008.

094_EMILIO_0922.indd 96

As a tennis superstar, Sanchez was a wanted man. His talents were tapped to captain the Spanish Davis Cup team. He did this for three years, resigning after Spain’s victory in 2008; in 2009 the Brazilian tennis confederation chose him to coordinate the sport of tennis in Brazil. He was frequently in the spotlight and consequently often found himself traveling and working long hours. “I was on a roller coaster in Spain,” he says. In 1999, he married Simona Bronzetti from Palermo, Italy, and he recalls hardly ever seeing his young family—together they have four children: Victoria, Emilio, Valentina, and Simon. What he really wanted to do was share with others what he had learned from playing tennis, saying he “felt compelled to help others.” In 2006, the former doubles partners were courted by a group of American investors attempting to open a tennis academy at the Naples Bath and Tennis Club. In 2007, the Sanchez/Casal team visited Naples and liked what they saw. Ultimately, the investors parted ways with the project, but Sanchez and Casal remained interested in opening an academy in Southwest Florida, and in 2012, they received the necessary financing to do so. There are currently five academies operating worldwide though Casal recently retired and resigned his name from use. The Sanchez family of six uprooted from their home in Spain and began new lives in America. “I’m so thankful to this country,” he says, “especially for the ability to grow my business as I envisioned it and to practice what I love to do.” Presently Sanchez is awaiting an interview to obtain his American citizenship. His children will likely follow in this path, as daughter Victoria is attending the University of Tampa and son Emilio will begin his postsecondary studies at the University of Central Florida in the fall of 2022. Both are playing tennis for their respective colleges while they study. Firm in his belief that children shouldn’t have to make the choice between sports and schoolwork, Sanchez oversees all facets of the academy’s operations. He boasts that the school—he refers to it as a “boutique school”—offers a rigorous academic program for students aged 12 through 18, noting that 19 advanced placement (AP) classes are now offered. Of the 2022 graduating class, he comments that nine of the 10 graduates were accepted to play various levels of tennis at postsecondary education facilities spanning the country. Sanchez is a big believer in what tennis teaches—students

learn to be “more resilient, more adaptive, more disciplined, and ready for what happens in life.” Sanchez has mastered utilizing the sport of tennis as the framework to train for everyday trials and tribulations. As tennis is a sport that requires incredible physicality, Sanchez promotes training each day. “Without the training you can’t succeed,” he says, pointing out that “Rafael Nadal trains 90 percent of the time and plays in tournaments only 10 percent of the time.” As a coach, Sanchez emphasizes the importance of taking care of the whole body by adhering to the right diet, getting enough sleep, and taking restorative breaks, as well as receiving positive mental coaching. Sanchez pushes his students to use 100 percent of their energy for the game, declaring “you play better life with good training.” Ultimately the pathway to playing professional tennis is tough. Sanchez explains that there are thousands of players fighting for a few top spots every year. If we can’t all be pros, then as Sanchez has discovered, we are best served using tennis as the framework to train children for a life well-lived. «

LIVING THE DREAM Meet alumnus Pietro Perego, from Milan, Italy. A 2020 graduate of the Naples-based Emilio Sanchez Academy, he now plays Division I tennis for the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, where he studies sports management and kinesiology. There were six students in his graduating class; a total of 42 students attended the academy that year. He says he became very

close with his classmates, who came from as far away as Norway and the United Kingdom. They lived together, ate together, and played together. Perego first learned about the academy while watching his brother Giulio compete at a tournament held at the Sanchez-Casal Tennis Academy in Barcelona, Spain. Ultimately Perego wanted to play an NCAA Division I sport while also studying for a future career. Tennis

provided the perfect alley. “This was not something I could do in my country,” he says. But he could while enrolled at the Sanchez Academy in Florida. “The U.S. is a crazy land full of tennis courts. It’s a dream life for an athlete,” he adds. About his experience at the academy, Perego gives it a 10 out of 10. “I’m very hard-headed,” he says. “Emilio was a good fit for me as he has lots of patience.” NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022

Brooke Sweat, renowned beach volleyball champion and United States Olympian, resides in Estero with her family and enjoys being a part of the local community.

nited States Olympian Brooke Sweat put Florida Gulf Coast University on the map for volleyball as the school’s first recruit to commit for the team’s inaugural season in 2004. The Florida-born athlete attended the prestigious Canterbury School in Fort Myers and was inducted into FGCU’s Hall of Fame last year. Sweat credits her husband, Nick Sweat, and his twin brother, Chris, also professional volleyballers and Naples natives, for first getting her out on the beach to play. Brooke and Nick met at age 14 while playing in the USA South Volleyball club. The pair reconnected a few years later in college. Brooke Sweat’s love of the game and native talent launched her to professional status. She landed a spot with Team USA in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro with partner Lauren Fendrick. Sweat’s career, however, hasn’t been all smooth sailing; she’s dealt with a fair share of adversity throughout. She has had eight surgeries since 2004 and experienced a disappointing loss at the Rio Olympics. And Sweat just missed qualifying for the 2020 Olympic games (pushed to 2021 due to the pandemic) while holding rankings of sixth in the world and third in the U.S. with her partner, beach volleyball legend Kerri Walsh Jennings. Only the top two teams from each country head to the Olympics; Sweat and Walsh Jennings came up just short. Sweat recalls the irony that the coolest moment of her life—playing in the 2016 Olympic Games—was also her biggest heartache. “We had every single emotion while we were there,” she says. “Looking back, it was really an incredible moment of my life. Unfortunately, we had the toughest pool for competition, and we didn’t play our best volleyball. But,” she adds, “the experience of being there, walking in the Opening Ceremony, it really hit me—‘You’re an Olympian, surrounded by the best athletes in the world.’” Sweat relates that, despite tearing her rotator cuff and needing a minor repair, Fendrick still chose to team up with her. And for that Sweat says she’s forever grateful. “She stuck with me through my surgery and getting me back in time for the Olympics. That was huge.” In 2018, Sweat needed another surgery on her shoulder. “At that time, I thought my career was over. I was planning on moving back

home [from California]. And, you know, I was okay with it.” Sweat and Fendrick continued to share mutual respect as players and friends. Says Fendrick, “Brooke was always a hard worker, and she never complained. She was extremely dedicated, as is shown by her willingness to move across the country away from her husband for long stretches of training and competition. And that’s also shown by her willingness to train and rehab through multiple injuries and surgeries. “Her volleyball IQ, ability to read hitters, her jump, and her shot touch on the ball are incredible,” continues Fendrick. “I really enjoyed coming up with unique game plans together and really challenging teams to get the ball down against us.” Through all her career trials, Sweat never lost sight of her deep faith. “It’s really easy to just feel sorry for yourself,” she says. “That’s not where I am. I know there’s a plan for my life. And you know, [God’s] plan is greater, more than anything I could ever imagine.” Sweat also holds her family close. “I have great support from them,” she says. “Through all the tough times, they’ve been there for me and just reminded me, ‘God’s got you in his hands, no matter what the circumstances.’” All the injuries she sustained over the years revealed a silver lin-

ing—she’s back home surrounded by her family in Florida, where she can watch her nieces and nephews grow. Her sister, Holly, recently had another baby and Sweat became an aunt for the third time. Now Sweat’s days consist of going to X3 Performance and Physical Therapy in Fort Myers as she’s still rehabbing from recent knee surgery. She does therapy, workouts, and what they call “prehab” for preventing further injury. She and Nick and her parents have separate homes on the same 30 acres of land in Estero; Holly and her family also have a home here. Of course, Brooke and Nick have their own beach volleyball court at home where they often do drills—most of the time for fun. They attend Summit Church in Estero and enjoy attending sporting events at FGCU. One of their favorite pastimes is venturing to the Naples Pier, where Nick likes to arrange pickup volleyball games. Brooke’s ideal Saturday involves a stop at Fe-

“When Brooke retired from indoor [play] and decided to transition to beach, she really put our program on the map—especially how fast the success came for her at the beach. Brooke was always the most prepared person on the floor. She was a woman playing with girls. She always had a much higher level of understanding the game.”

lipe’s Taqueria in Naples for tacos or dinner at Sea Salt on Third Street South. Still, Sweat misses her sport and is far from ready to give it up. “I want to rehab and get my knee back to where if I want to play, I can compete at the highest level,” she says. “That’s where my mind is right now. I want to compete for more.” Her goal is to be back and ready to play sometime in October. “We’ll see. I always say one thing, and God’s got other plans,” Sweat says. “I’d still like to play on the world tour and travel around and play domestically here in the U.S. in the [Association of Volleyball Professionals, the premier U.S. pro beach volleyball league]. My goal is to get healthy enough to do that.” Sweat looks forward to whatever the future holds. “Volleyball doesn’t define me,” she says. “It’s just a platform I use to share my face, and I think however [life] happens, it happens that way for a reason.” «

BENJAMIN H. YORMAK Benjamin H. Yormak is a board-certified expert in labor and employment law. His firm only represents employees, and much of his practice involves whistleblower cases and cases involving fraud. In 2019, he was lead counsel in a nationwide fraud case that settled for nearly $90 million. In United States v. 21st Century Oncology et. al (2015), Yormak successfully represented a whistle-blower who challenged Medicare fraud, which resulted in a recovery of more than $25 million. Yormak has been recognized by Super Lawyers magazine each year since 2016, an honor bestowed upon only the top 2 percent of Florida attorneys as voted by their peers. Yormak has also been recognized by Best Lawyers, a renowned publication made up of distinguished legal professionals from the world’s leading law firms and many of the General Counsel from Fortune 500 and Global 500 companies. He has won the Avvo Client Choice Award each year since 2012, has been recognized as a “Lawyer of Distinction” (2018), and has been honored as a “Top 40 Under 40” by The National Advocates. Yormak previously worked with the U.S. Department of Justice and received his J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law and his A.B. from Bowdoin College, graduating with honors.

SAILS RESTAURANTS

OUT TO BRUNCH Cooked on the restaurant’s wood-burning grill and served with roasted vegetables and a Provençal vinaigrette, this branzino is among the abundant savory dishes served during the weekend brunch at Sails Restaurant in Naples. “We wanted to provide an experience for the community,” says Veljko Pavicevic, who co-owns the restaurant with his wife, Corinne Ryan. “Many of our customers had no place to celebrate special occasions over the weekend.” Popular dishes, such as tuna tartare and grass-fed Australian lamb are served with unlimited Champagne, fresh juices, and house-made kombucha. Or choose a brunch-worthy cocktail, like the Island Mimosa, which consists of Champagne with a custom blend of fresh pineapple and coconut, topped with pineapple foam. Desserts include the signature French toast, which takes four days to prepare. Brunch is offered on Saturdays and Sundays, with seatings at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Turn the page for more brunch ideas. FRESH TAKE

Drawing on both his professional training and Italian background, Naples caterer Patrick McGrath Beraduce matches his customers with meals that are creative, healthy, and fun. “My mother was an entrepreneur,” says the chef, “so I was always in the kitchen with my grandmother when I was growing up. She was from the Campobasso region of Italy and taught me both traditional recipes and family secrets.” He founded the company Quality Thyme Meals last year during the pandemic in response to customers who were seeking a private, in-home dining experience. In addition to providing tasting menus for families and groups, he works with businesses, schools, and specialty purveyors, such as the Southwest Florida Picnic Co. Beraduce began working in restaurants at age 14 and graduated from the Culinary Institute of America at Hyde Park in New York with a bachelor of business administration degree in food business management. After cooking school, he became fascinated with the process of distillation and worked with the Taconic Distillery in upstate New York as well as Seattle’s Westland

Distillery. He managed both tasting rooms and served as the in-house chef at Westland, devising food pairings for the peated whiskey selections. As a chef, he focuses on using hyper-local ingredients like guanabana, a relative of jackfruit that he uses in desserts such as crème brûlée. He’s also fond of braising Florida wild boar in red wine and mushrooms to make a filling for tortelloni. Beraduce’s goal is to someday open a bed and breakfast with farmland and livestock. UNCOMMON STOCK David McCone is an ambassador for the probiotic goodness of fermented and pickled foods. Building on the success of The Naples Canning Co., which he launched in 2019, McCone recently opened The Farm Stand, a gourmet food store on Bonita Beach Road. “I wanted to have retail distribution,” he explains, “but since I use local, organic, and small-batch products, I realized I wasn’t going to be stocked in supermarkets and big-box stores. I needed to branch out on my own.” At The Farm Stand, McCone carries his popular jams, jellies, and pickles sourced from produce at Inyoni Organic Farm in Naples and 12 Seasons Farm in Fort Myers. He’s added handmade cast iron skillets from Smithey Ironware Co. in Charleston, South Carolina, and ceramics from Vermont’s Farmhouse Pottery, plus a curated selection of wines as well as coffee and chocolate from area artisans. “Everything is culinary-related, and nothing is cookie-cutter,” he says. “Quality always comes first. As a result of COVID, I think there’s a huge amount of interest in anti-inflammatory foods. Gut health is vitally important—we’re constantly learning about the ways in which it’s connected to everything else.” McCone also offers a variety of picnic baskets, a step toward his goal of establishing a CSA (community-supported agriculture) program that will allow him to showcase local farmers. “This is a good start, but I have a broad vision of what it could become. We have some terrific gourmet markets in this area, but very little focus on artisanal American products. My goal is to raise awareness in the community.” (naplescanningco.com) –M.S.

BALANCE

YOUR BEST SELF: FITNESS, NUTRITION, MINDFULNESS, WELL-BEING

EXPERT ADVICE

When Positive Becomes

NEGATIVE Positivity isn’t always beneficial. In fact, sometimes it’s toxic. While research suggests optimism may lower the risk of developing cardiovascular conditions and even help one live longer, it becomes toxic “when in an interpersonal way, you are saying things to shut down someone else’s experience of their emotions,” says Caryl Rosen, PhD, a clinical psychologist and founding member of Mosaic Therapy in Naples. Instead of the recipient feeling better, they often feel “misunderstood, shut down, and distanced,” she explains. Rosen says she often notices toxic positivity directed at people who experience a breakup or a significant loss. It’s often used by parents who aren’t sure how to respond to their child’s sadness or anxiety. Another example: people sharing only the positive aspects of their life on social media. “I don’t think people who engage in toxic positivity are malicious or intentional,” Rosen says, who notes using common, seemingly positive phrases can simply become a habit. To learn more about toxic positivity, turn the page. (mosaictherapyfl.com) –Erika Klein

BALANCE

TOXIC Positivity 101 What phrases often indicate toxic positivity? A few examples include “Don’t worry, be happy”; “Look for the silver lining”; and “Everything happens for a reason.”

What can you do if you encounter toxic positivity? If someone is using phrases that feel like toxic positivity, psychologist Caryl Rosen advises a delicate response. The goal, she explains, is not to change the other person but to speak up for immediate needs. Rosen suggests the following reply: “You know, what I really need is for you to just sit with me; don’t say anything encouraging, that’s not where I am right now.”

FITNESS

Athletic Republic

Naples is full of fitness options, but for resident Carolyn Homberger, the town was missing a place where she could work out with her husband and three kids. “We really saw a need for this in our community,” she explains. A long-distance runner who recently departed a corporate job, she decided to fill this fitness gap by opening an Athletic Republic franchise. With sports performance training for athletes starting at age 7, the gym, according to Homberger, allows her entire family to train at their own individual levels, focusing on performance optimization and injury prevention. Highlights include state-of-the-art performance testing tools that track progress, video analysis capabilities, and equipment that measures exertion levels. The gym is open to everyone from professional athletes to families. Homberger notes, “Athletes are all ages, shapes, and sizes.” (naples.athleticrepublic.com) –E.K. Clockwise from left: The Homberger family at Athletic Republic’s ribbon cutting; super running treadmill at an incline; kids’ agility drills. 138

How can you keep positivity nontoxic? When it comes to toxic positivity, Rosen says there are no absolutes and that phrases like “things will get better” can help if they’re offered in the context of genuine support. “Are you also saying, ‘this is really hard,’ ‘let’s talk about it,’ and ‘you’re not alone’?” asks Rosen. “When you’ve said those phrases that are more emotionally connecting, then you can say ‘things will get better’ and ‘let’s see where things are in a week.’” She adds, “Accepting other people and meeting them where they are is the antidote to toxic positivity.” –E.K.

FREE BOOKS

FOR COLLIER COUNTY KIDS Kids in many Collier County elementary schools receive free books every month thanks to the nonprofit organization Books for Collier Kids. Chair Sallie Williams explains that the Naples-based organization started in 2005 to improve literacy in households. “So many of us take for granted that our children and grandchildren have dozens of books at home,” she says. “But children in every corner of Collier County, if it weren’t for Books for Collier Kids, would not have [them] to share, cherish, and enjoy.” The organization provides more than 100,000 new books to around 10,000 kids each year. Literacy and education help improve the success of children, but they need help to get there. “If you want to learn to play the piano, you have to have a piano,” Williams says, quoting the organization’s founder Joanne Wyss. “And similarly, if you want to learn to read, you’ve got to have books.” (booksforcollierkids.org) —E.K.

SNACKING ON

Several years ago, Russell Hollander purchased a mushroom-growing kit as a gift. After storing the kit in his closet for a couple of weeks, he noticed oyster mushrooms growing out of the side. Intrigued, he cooked and ate the mushrooms and later used the box to grow more. Eventually, Hollander started the Naplesbased mushroom farm Care2Grow and is now a self-professed mushroom lover. “I learned so much about how they’re really beneficial for our health and our environment and how fungus is really the basis of all soils on Earth,” Hollander expounds. Mushrooms are high in essential nutrients like zinc and selenium and a good source of protein, fiber, and antioxidants. Hollander recommends lion’s mane and king trumpet mushrooms, both of which he sells at the Third Street South Farmer’s Market. For a delicious mushroom substitute for popcorn chicken, try Hollander’s recipe below. (care2grow.com) –E.K.

WINGED WONDERS At first glance, two juvenile burrowing owls appear to embrace in this poignant photograph by Cindy Barbanera-Wedel of Sarasota. However, as she explains, the owls actually are preparing “for adulthood by practicing stalking and pouncing on one another.” Entitled Owlet Antics, the dynamic shot was photographed in May 2020 in Cape Coral, where burrowing owls are local avifauna and the city’s official bird. As their name indicates, these petite owls live belowground, occupying either holes they dig themselves or those vacated by small animals like squirrels. BarbaneraWedel’s photography has been well-displayed across Southwest Florida; she’s received awards and commendations from Friends of Rookery Bay in collaboration with United Arts Council of Collier County and Bird Photographer of the Year. Her first solo exhibit came in 2022 at Sarasota Orchestra’s Harmony Gallery, where 21 selected bird images were showcased. (sleepyseahorse.com; @shopsleepyseahorse)
